Consultant Anesthesiologist · Pain Physician · Calabar

Dr. Emmanuel Kenne Djunda

Pain that has outlasted the injury behind it still has a cause. Finding that cause — and treating it — is the work of the pain clinic Dr. Djunda runs at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, alongside anesthesia for every kind of operation.

The question you will be asked

Where are you on the scale, right now?

What each number means →
  1. 0

    No pain

  2. 1-3

    Mild

  3. 4-6

    Moderate

  4. 7-9

    Severe

  5. 10

    Worst possible

Most people wait far too long at four, five and six — the range where pain is already costing them sleep and work. That is the range this clinic exists for.

Pain management

Treating pain as the problem, not only as a symptom of something else

Pain medicine is a distinct discipline built on top of anesthesia. It uses the same tools — nerve blocks, targeted injections, careful drug choice — but aims them at pain that has become the illness in its own right.

Chronic pain assessment

A full consultation for pain that has lasted beyond the expected healing time: back and neck pain, nerve pain, joint pain, pain after surgery or injury. The first visit is about finding the cause, not only quieting the symptom.

Ultrasound-guided pain intervention

Targeted injections and nerve blocks placed under ultrasound, so the medicine reaches the structure that is generating the pain. Trained through the Ultrasound Pain Intervention course at the Delhi Pain Management Centre.

Pain relief in labour

Epidural and other analgesia for childbirth, discussed before the day so you know your options. Labour pain management has been part of his practice at every stage of his career.

Pain after surgery

Post-operative pain planning and prescribing, including care in the post-anesthesia care unit, so that recovery is not held back by pain that could have been controlled.

Anesthesia

Someone has to be awake while you are not

An anesthesiologist does more than send you to sleep. They assess whether you are fit for the operation, hold your breathing, heart and blood pressure steady throughout it, and plan how you will be kept comfortable afterwards. Dr. Djunda has done that at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital since 2001, across obstetric, orthopedic, pediatric, neurological, eye and day-case surgery.
